Our clients wanted to update their terraced home to create a large kitchen and entertaining space opening onto the garden. The existing ground floor comprised two living rooms in the main part of the house and a long thin kitchen in the original rear extension onto which an open plan garden room had been added. This space was long and thin and created something of a ‘railway carriage’ effect.
Our proposal was to infill the passage to the side of the rear extension and to incorporate most of the back living room into the large kitchen/ dining/ living room, using a small part of this room to create a downstairs cloakroom, including a shower.
There was a fair bit of structure involved in holding up the first floor above and that, combined with an odd boundary relationship, enabled us to create a really interesting ceiling across the kitchen and dining spaces. Our client was very happy with the result.
