Our client Brooke Copp-Barton, an interior designer, contacted us prior to buying a holiday home in Whitstable. She was looking at two houses in the same street and in the end opted for the one that needed complete refurbishment.
Our brief was to open up the back extension to create a large kitchen/ dining/ living room, opening out onto the garden and to include a separate downstairs toilet and a utility room; create a roof extension to accommodate a new master bedroom and ensuite; completely refurbish the existing house including dealing properly with the residual damp problems in the ground floor walls dating from the ‘Great North Sea Flood’ of 1953. As an Interior Designer, our client had a clear idea of the finishes she wanted to use in each room and she worked with us to create the various new spaces as a backdrop, which she then furnished and decorated. Despite being in a Conservation Area, we obtained planning permission for a full width roof extension to the rear slope (i.e. party wall to party wall), maximising the available space in the roof and including a new roof light in the front slope to provide light and volume to the en-suite shower room. The zinc cladding and Crittal windows to the roof and ground floor extensions gives the new elements of the exterior a crisp modern finish, which contrasts well with the carefully restored original late Victorian house.
