Adam and Catriona’s previous kitchen extension had been successful and enjoyed but whenever they had guests everyone wanted to sit in it, and with more than four people it was quite a squeeze!
The new brief was to create an open plan kitchen with more storage space, including an island for meal preparation and informal meals, and a larger seating area.
Adam specified triple track sliding doors instead of the bi-fold doors on the earlier extension, because the bi-folds were rarely fully open. The new sliding doors had to be triple glazed to ensure the new space was warm in winter. The steel structural frame was also quite a design feat (thanks to engineers Holt and Wotton) but as a result the new space is transparent on two sides so that the beautiful garden can be enjoyed all year round.
The kitchen now provides masses of storage, including custom made oak cupboards and shelving built by Mat Davis of Nice Carpentry.
Externally, the original lean-to roof is extruded and wrapped around the existing main building to create a unified rear and side elevation. The zinc roof is simply extended through from the existing roof and the solid walls are clad in traditional chamfered timber weatherboard.
The resulting space makes Adam and Catriona very happy, and their guests too!
